TENNIS: Horncastle club has another busy weekend

First up on Saturday was the U9 team of George Hunter, Poppy Pearson, Sophie Wilderspin and Charlie Giles, who travelled to Eastgate, Lincoln.

Charlie was playing up an age group and had some tough matches, narrowly losing out 7-5 in a deciding tie-break in one of his singles but winning his second singles 8-6. George also won one and lost one of his singles rubbers. Poppy won both her singles matches and Sophie won one and lost one.

The boys lost their doubles match but the girls came to the rescue and won their doubles, securing a 6-4 win for Horncastle.

The U8 team had a more straight forward win against Boston TC on Sunday morning. The team of Sophie Munks, Jessica Frick, Charlie Giles and Katharine Hunter lost only one rubber for a 15-1 win to Horncastle.

The U10 team of Max Wilson and Rowan and Redford Bramley travelled to Eastgate, Lincoln for their match on Saturday morning. The boys fought hard but lost the match.

Ben Tyrrell, Ross Armstrong, Alex Armstrong and Jake Taylor played away at Grantham for the U14 team and enjoyed a clean sweep, winning all their singles and doubles rubbers. Both Jake and Alex had tight matches and had to fight hard to secure their singles wins on tie breaks.

The ladies’ seniors first team travelled to Washinborough for their match. Jane Clark and Sue Leggate, and Jenny Golland and Mireya MacRury, won all eight sets to retain their current position at the top of the league. At home against Boston, they were on fine form and won all eight rubbers with the loss of only a few games.

The ladies’ senior seconds played at Spalding but the team of Julie Hillsmith and Collette Rigley, and Yvonne Thomas and Jane Reeds, only managed to win one rubber, through Julie and Collette.

The men’s Aegon singles team had tough opposition from Boston. Representing Horncastle were Karl Sutton, Ross Armstrong, Alden Midmer and Carl Pogson. Karl won his singles but the rest of the rubbers were lost, so 5-1 to Boston

Saturday was the club’s Great British Tennis Weekend Open Day, part of a national LTA initiative. Coaches Karl, Mark and Shirley Sutton ran the day, ably assisted by trained leaders Louis Croves and Joe Sheldon.

Twenty-six new families enjoyed taster tennis sessions, from ages four through to adults, with many choosing to join our club and continue playing tennis throughout the year.
