Competing in the Loughborough summer series, Jim’s hopes of success appeared to be ended before they began when he was caught up in a traffic jam on the A46, nearly missing his first event, the shot putt.

However, the Wragby competitor made it with 10 minutes to spare, but had to make do with a swift warm-up.

“I threw badly early in the competition, but by round five I had got going,” Jim said.

“That is when I threw 8.65m to win the competition.”

Jim then took part in the hammer throw.

Again he claimed first place with a throw of 20.03m, his third best of the season to date.

Kieran has his first Young Athlete’s League competition on Sunday at Doncaster, at the Keepmoat Stadium.

First up was the Javelin, where he threw extremely well placing second with a personal best of 30.93m, an improvement on his previous best by more than 3m.

In the 100m hurdles he set a personal best time in 16.2 seconds.

Jim added: “I am absolutely delighted with those performances, especially on such a cold windy day. It augers well for the rest of the season.”

Both Jim and Kieran will be competing in the county championships at Grantham on May 15.
