NOSTALGIA: ‘Monster from the deep’ salvaged from Boston Docks in 1981 (GALLERY)

A crowd gathered at Boston Docks in late November, 1981, as 100 tons of twisted metal – a toppled quayside crane – was hauled from 14ft of murky water.

These pictures of the salvage operation were taken by Standard photographer Gary Atkinson and appeared alongside the headline ‘monster of the deep’.

The structure, which was almost totally submerged, used to be a quayside crane.

It had toppled into the dock basin earlier that month after being hit by a 1,100 tonne Panamanian-registered cargo boat.

The salvage operation was carried out by Denniss Garage and Crane Hire, of Long Sutton.
