The courts have been buzzing with activity at Woodhall Spa Tennis Club’s Jubilee Park.
The ladies’ first team are still looking for their first win, having played and lost three matches. In their first match, the team played Boston 2nd and lost 6-3. The games were closely fought and one of the rubbers was lost on a final tie-break, so the result could not have been much closer.
Playing for Woodhall were Alison Lauder and Helen Mair, Sue Leggate and Jenny Caswell, and Bridgett Scott and Wendy Harrison. All three couples won one match and lost two.
In their second encounter of the season, the ladies played Boston who proved to be a very strong team and defeated Spa 8-1. Sam Parker and Sue Leggate won Woodhall’s only rubber. Also playing were Sue Bowser and Helen Mair, and Alison Lauder and Jenny Caswell.
Last weekend, the team travelled to Appleby Frodingham to play on grass courts – a rare but enjoyable experience these days. In sunny but extremely windy conditions, the ladies battled hard and lost by the narrowest of margins, 5-4.
Representing Woodhall were Lydia Walker and Alison Lauder, Sam Parker and Sue Leggate, and Bridgett Scott and Wendy Harrison. The team was glad to welcome Lydia for her first match of the season following her exams and she and Alison deserved special mention for their match against the third couple in which they won the first set 6-4, lost the second 6-1, and went on to win the deciding tie-break 11-9, having fought back from 7-2 down.
