Horncastle HC Men’s 1st 3
Cambridge University 3rds 1
Horncastle Hockey Club’s Men’s Firsts continued their fantastic start to the East League - EML Division 2N campaign with a 3-1 victory over Cambridge University Thirds on Saturday.
The result makes it nine wins and a draw from the opening 10 contests.
The visitors were lively and well-organised and started off well with a high press.
However, this left them exposed and Horncastle’s wingers quickly played the ball up to captain Scott, who made the most of the counter attack tactic by scoring the first goal of the game.
Cambridge were not rattled by going a goal down so early in the game and maintained the pressure for the rest of the half.
After some good defending from the hosts’s back line, Cambridge couldn’t find a breakthrough.
Horncastle’s lead didn’t last long into the second half as Cambridge won and converted a short corner.
The game looked to slip away from Horncastle as Cambridge maintained a solid structure, but a stray pass from the Cambridge defence saw Bennett break away and convert on his reverse stick.
Cambridge heads dropped after all of their hard work and their lack of game management started to show.
A quick turnover saw Bennett and James Harris on the break with a two-on-one, Harris smoothly making it 3-1 at the back post.
Some expert saves by Horncastle keeper Jack Ashton meant Cambridge could not get any points from the game.
Man of the match was Chris Partridge.

An injury to Andrew Lammiman seemed to take the wind out of Horncastle’s sails and Leadenham took the lead.

Horncastle HC Ladies 2nd 4
On a cold morning, Horncastle Ladies’s Seconds travelled to Skegness to play Spilsby in their seventh match of the season.

However, it was the hosts who opened the scoring on the break.
Determined to bring the scores level, Horncastle remained focused, but Spilsby made it 2-0 following a short corner.
Horncastle were back in the game when a great run from Sharpe managed to find Cory on the back post, the ball slotted home.
A short while later the ball was once again slipped to Cory, who levelled the scores.
Following a strong talk at half time, Horncastle were more determined than ever to finish this match with a victory.
Wood put them 3-2 up following a short corner only for Spilsby to level via a rebounded effort.
But Horncastle got their deserved winner with eight minutes to go via Bingham.
