Wragby father and son athletes Jim and Kieran Gillespie competed at Loughborough on Wednesday.

Kieran took part in the 800m and the shot put, whilst his dad contested the shot.

Kieran ran brilliantly in the 800m, winning the event in a personal best time of 2min 30.7sec. He was lying sixth with 200m to go, but then stormed through the field to cross the finish line first.

Jim said: “I’ve never seen him run so well, and to get a win at Loughborough is a real feather in his cap.”

Moving on to the shot, Kieran finished in a very respectable second place with a throw of 8.61m.

His father Jim triumphed in his shot competition with a throw of 8.79m.

Jim said: “I haven’t lost a shot competition at Loughborough this year. That’s very pleasing.”

The duo were back in action and enjoyed more success at the Trophy Meeting at Stoke on Trent at the weekend.

Firstly, Kieran won the sprint hurdles event and then went on to finish as runner-up in the discus with a throw of 23.9m, his second best ever.

Jim contested the shot which he won with 8.90m and was victorious also in the discus with a throw of 27.83m.

Jim said: “To go all that way and come home with three golds and a silver was a great result.”

Jim will be heading for Epsom at the weekend where he will contest the National Veterans’ Athletics Championships.
