Horncastle Tennis Club’s U12 team sealed the county Aegon League when they won at Market Deeping on Sunday morning in their final match of the season.
Horncastle and Deeping had both won all their matches so far so this match would decide the league winners.
Ross Armstrong playing at number one was up against a higher ranked player and lost his singles 6-1 6-1. Ben Tyrrell also lost his singles in a close game 6-4 7-6.
Freddie Dobbin and Joe Sheldon lost the first set of their doubles 6-2, but then made a great come back to win the second set 6-2 and completed the comeback by winning the deciding tie break.
Ross and Ben lost their doubles 6-1 6-1. Joe Sheldon won his singles in straight sets 6-2 7-6 and Freddie produced another comeback from a set down to win his rubber.
This meant the match was tied at three all so would be decided by a doubles tie break shoot out. Captain Karl Sutton nominated Ross Armstrong and Joe Sheldon to play the doubles shoot out. The boys played very well to produce a nail biting 10-8 win to secure the match and win the league.
Other team members that have played in previous matches in this league and contributed to the win are Charlie Tant and Freddie Merritt. The boys train at Horncastle twice a week all year round and all their hard work is paying off.
