Horncastle Mens 2nd XI 3 Peterborough Mens 9th XI 1
Happy Horncastle clinched the Division 6NW (N) league title with a convincing victory against Peterborough on Saturday.
The hard working George Reed took the man of the match award, but the key to the win was another impressive team performance that has been the highlight of so many of Horncastle’s games this season.
Unlike some matches when they have found themselves trailing, Horncastle started the game well.
They passed the ball around well to create an opening for George Dann to score with a carefully placed chip over the Peterborough ‘keeper after 10-minutes.
A deserved second goal arrived midway through the first half when a shot rebounded off the Peterborough post and was tapped in by Dann.
Shortly after Horncastle’s second goal, Peterborough broke quickly and a good finish saw them open their account with a well-placed shot.
Despite that setback, Horncastle continued playing well in the second half and some excellent passing produced several shots on goal - but no further goals.
Peterborough tried to keep their hopes alive but Horncastle’s determined efforts meant the visitors had few scoring chances.
It was no more than Horncastle deserved when one of their attacks resulted in leading scorer Dick Bee’s deflected shot giving him his 15th goal of the season.
With time running out, Horncastle had a chance to make it 4-1 when they were awarded a penalty flick, but captain Jack Read could get the ball past the ‘keeper.
The final whistle sparked celebrations among the Horncastle squad who can’t be caught at the top of the table. With one game remaining, they lead nearest rivals Alford by five points.
