For a relatively small club Horncastle’s Indoor Bowlers are having a good season in both County Leagues and national competitions.

Horncastle hold top positions in the men’s County LIBA League Division 3, Division 1 of the County Mixed League and Division 2 of the Men’s Over 60s League.

Unfortunately the Ladies are fourth in Group 2 of the County Trudy Bates Competition, but it has been a very difficult season with so few ladies available or willing to play.

However, the Ladies have done very well in national competitions, getting through to the last 16 in two and narrowly losing out in two more.

In the Ladies Over 60s Singles, Horncastle’s Lesley Holmes meets Barbara Lewis from Leicester playing at Newark IBC next week; and will also play in the Over 50s 2-wood Triples with Jill King and Mary Johnson when they meet Nottingham’s P.Cutts and her team at Melton Mowbray IBC on Saturday March 1.

Mary Johnson is also through to the semi-final of the Ladies County Singles, which will be played in Horncastle on March 30.

The men have also been doing well in competition, with Paul Bark and Jackie Green through to the last eight in the Mixed Pairs and Norman Burton in the EBF County Over 65 Singles Finals to be played in Louth on March 8 when he meets Harry Putland.

Paul Bark, Keith Jackman, Richard Whitaker and Steve Boucher were narrowly defeated in their National Fours last 16 match, losing to Graham Smith, Paul Simpson, Ashley Curess and Matt Whyers of Spalding.

This very even game, 12 all after 12 ends, could have gone either way, but unfortunately the Horncastle team dropped a 4 and 5 late in the game and could not pull back. The final Score was Spalding 23 Horncastle 16.

If anyone would like to come along to try their hand at bowls, the club in Coronation Walk, next to the swimming pool, will be open on Sunday March 9 at 10am. Equipment is provided so why not give it a go.
