Bowls club ladies claim Leeds scalp

Horncastle Indoor Bowls Club's over 60s ladies team competed in the national Mason Trophy on Friday, defeating Leeds in a memorable fixture.

One rink is played at home and one away in this competition.

In the first round proper, Horncastle were drawn against Leeds and the ladies - Olive Wells, Mary Johnson, Jill King, Audrey Sivil, Trish Scholey, Judith Moody, Shiela Grimwood and Margaret Walmsley - had an excellent day with both the home and away teams winning.

Rink scores: O. Wells won 26-6 and P. Scholey won 17-13.

The next match will take place on December 7, a little closer to home against the winners of North Cave and Dunholme.

The men were beaten by Skegness in their Denny Cup match.

The third round contest saw both home teams win, whilst the away teams lost.

The game was eventually lost on shots scored, where Skegness scored 87 shots to Horncastle’s 76.

In the LIBA Over 60s, Horncastle competed in the double rinks against Stamford B, umpired by Leslie Smith.

They had a good result, winning by two shots.

Rink Scores: N. Rodgers lost 12-20 and N. Burton won 17-7.

In the LIBA Mixed League, Horncastle played host to Lincoln.

After a close couple of initial ends Horncastle went on to take advantage of home rink to win convincingly by 16 points to 2, with Horncastle claiming 115 shots to Lincoln’s 69.

Rink Scores: N. Burton won 16-10; O. Wells won 26-12; J. Scholey lost 16-20; K. Taplin won 31-13; J. Moody won 26-14.

In the men’s LIBA Division Two, the team have played two matches in the last three weeks both away.

The men travelled to play against an in-form Skegness team where they lost 2 points to 16, scoring 84 shots to 111.

Secondly, the men then travelled to Louth where they put up a strong performance to win by 14 points to 4, having scored 110 shots to 84.

Rink scores: J. Bontoft won 24-16; J. Day lost 15-17; J. Scholey won 23-15; K. Taplin won 30-13 and J. Rapley lost 18-23.

Horncastle IBC’s LIBA Men’s League team had previously seen action against Boston and Stamford teams last month.

At Boston B they lost by 14 points to 4.

Rink scores: J. Day 23-10, K. Taplin 13-20, J. Scholey 12-34, J. Bontoft 22-17, John Hoyles 11- 20.

Horncastle then hosted Stamford B and had a convincing win by 14 points to 4.

Rink scores: J. Day 18-23, K. Jackman 18-20, K. Taplin18-17, J. Bontoft 27-10, J. Scholey 33-7.

The club’s latest friendly game was against Spilsby.

Horncastle, winning on two rinks and losing on two, lost overall by 50 shots to 60, with Spilsby fielding a very strong trio from Skegness to make up their team.

Horncastle Indoor Bowls Club will play host to the initial rounds of the county’s under 18s tournaments on Saturday.

Action runs from 10am onwards.

Anyone is welcome to pop in and support the youngsters in their attempt to reach the next round.
