Wragby athlete Jim Gillespie was back in action on Sunday, competing in the Midlands Masters Athletics Championships at Nuneaton.
He was delighted to take a win the shot put with his opening effort of 8.74m.
Jim said: “I put it out there early and the rest could not catch me.”
Jim also finished second in the discus with 26.49m, his second best throw of the year.
The shot victory and his big discus win at Grimsby have put him top of the Irish rankings for both events this year.
Jim said: “The last time I won a Midlands title was 1981 when I came first in the junior men’s 400 metres hurdles!
“I’m really pleased to be honest because I have been laid up with a nasty chest infection since my win at Grimsby on Bank Holiday Monday and have not done any training, purely because I have felt awful.
“I hope to get a couple of weeks’ solid training in before my next competition at Loughborough.”
Jim’s son Kieran has also been suffering with the same bug and has not trained for more than a month, but that did not prevent him from taking third place in the 400m hurdles at the Lincs County Schools Championships in Boston on Saturday, finishing in a time just short of his personal best.
