A Woodhall Spa schoolboy won the prestigious Denman Cup at Heckington Show on Saturday.

In front of a crowd of several hundred, Frithville athlete William Wright led from the start in the 1500m race for under-15s, up against strong competition.

William, who has just left St Hugh’s School and plays cricket for Woodhall Spa, has only recently returned to competitive athletics following an illness and a spell in hospital in April.

William won the under-13 800m race two years ago and, despite being only under-13 now, he finished the under-15 race strongly with a comfortable 150m distance between him and the second place runner.

William said: “I was delighted with the run, as well as receiving such a wonderful silver cup.”

The Denman Cup for athletics was presented by the daughters of Jack Denman, Catherine and Zena. The original 1948 cup was lost, and the replacement cup was first presented last year in memory of their late father.

The original cup was won by none other than Lord Sebastian Coe in 1976.
