Wragby athlete Jim Gillespie was more than pleased with his performace in the UK Masters Championships in Birmingham on Saturday.
Going into the event, Jim was aiming for a top 10 finish in the discus and so was elated to finish in sixth place after he threw 28.29m.
Jim said: “To come sixth in the country was brilliant. After all I am a multi-eventer, so do not have the time to devote to specific events because I am training for five or six events in a week.
“I am still consistent around 28 metres, but feel that a 30 metre throw is still on.”
Jim’s son Kieran competed in the National League for Lincoln Wellington at Sheffield on Sunday.
The conditions were horrendous, cold and raining all day, however he competed superbly, placing third in the 100m hurdles with 17.4sec. He was just over half a second outside his best, but in the conditions it was an excellent effort.
Kieran then turned his attention to the discus in which he threw 23.75m, placing second with an effort only a metre below his best.
He then ran a superb leg in the 4x400m relay, keeping his team in the lead, and they went on to win the race.
Jim and Kieran’s next outing is the Biggleswade throws festival on August 6th, so we’re already training for that one.
