Horncastle U12s given tough lesson by Retford

Horncastle Town U12s 0 Retford United U12s 6

Horncastle Town Under 12s, sponsored by Mayfield Manufacturing and Bullring Barbers, were well beaten by Retford Utd in their opening A-league fixture.

It was a harsh introduction to the highest level as they struggled to cope with Retford’s speed of thought and movement. Only a string of fine saves from William Chamberlain kept the scoreline down. Without him ReTford could easily have reached double figures and beyond.

There was very little from a Horncastle point of view to report as Retford restricted the home side to a solitary shot on target from Spencer Burgess.

All Horncastle defenders deserve special mention as they faced something of an Alamo type scenario, especially in the second half. Isaac Bell, Oli Rennie, Jack Lunn and Sam Hull all had spells at the back and did their absolute best to restrict the flow.

Town must now look to learn how to play at this standard, mainly by increasing the number of options on the ball, giving good information, increasing the speed and effectiveness of their movement and to keep the ball for longer spells in better areas of the pitch.

Credit must go to Retford though. Their football at times was an absolute joy to watch. A blend of teamwork mixed with individual brilliance ensued they left Horncastle with a fully deserved victory.

This week sees Town travel to face Caythorpe and Fulbeck, another well established A-League team who will provide an equally stern test.
