FOOTBALL: Horncastle Town start pre-season with a win and a loss

Billinghay Athletic stepped in for Barrow Town as the visitors to The Wong in Horncastle Town’s second pre-season fixture on Saturday.

A Town side which featured many of the club’s reserve players scored in the final minutes of the game to defeat the Boston Premier Division side.

Scott Lowman opened the scoring on the half hour mark with a well hit shot from the edge of the area.

Billinghay were moving the ball well and were awarded a controversial penalty with 20 minutes left of the clock. The ball was converted from the spot successfully to level the game.

However, with just minutes remaining, Billinghay failed to clear their lines from a corner which fell to youngster Ben Fidling who fired between several players on the goal line to give Horncastle the win.

Holbeach United 5

Town were put through their paces in their opening game of pre-season as Holbeach hit the Wongers for five last Tuesday.

Twenty minutes in and, after a questionable decision by the referee, King got the scoring under way for the from the penalty spot for the visitors.

As expected, Holbeach saw the majority of the possession and Harness found himself isolated as Town concentrated on keeping solid as a unit.

Madigan doubled the Tigers’ advantage shortly after with a top drawer strike from 30 yards out.

Substitute Gosling, grabbed number three with a tap-in from close range, and then Tidswell notched a spectacular overhead kick after the half time break.

Ward rounded off the rout with the fifth as Horncastle began to tire, but to Town’s credit they never gave in and worked hard throughout the 90 minutes.

Next up for Town is a trip to UCL side Sleaford Town on Tuesday, kick-off 7.30pm.
