FOOTBALL: Horncastle Town Reserves battle into cup final

FC Monos 1 - Horncastle Town Res 3

Town’s Reserves swept into the final of the Horace Franklin Cup after an impressive win at FC Monos last Saturday.

Town were again without top scorer Jack Baxter but welcomed the return of Lewis Burchnall who took up the target man role in attack, with Sam Johnson and Luke Blondel playing either side of him.

They started well with a centre back pairing of James Blondel and Alec Enderby, looking organised in defence.

Town took the lead after 30 minutes when Burchnall was brought down in the box. Luke Blondel stepped up and smashed the spot kick home.

Five minutes later, Sam Johnson got onto a through ball, but was denied by the onrushing ‘keeper.

However, it wasn’t long before Town doubled the advantage. Burchnall held the ball up and found Johnson in on goal and his fine effort from 25 yards found the back of the net.

Town deservedly led 2-0 at the break but they were pegged back at the start of the second half without conceding a goal.

After weather the storm, Town went three-up when Lee Wilson’s curling corner was headed in by captain Scott Maplethorpe.

Town appeared to be cruising but with 20 minutes to go, a mix-up in defence gave FC Monos a lifeline as keeper Liam Smith failed to control a back pass from Lewis and the ball rolled into the net.

Smith redeemed himself well just five minutes later when he rushed to the edge of his box to bravely block a lobbed effort that was heading towards goal.

Both teams had chances in the final ten minutes but the defences stood strong as Town went through to the final where they will meet Saxilby Athletic.
