Battling Horncastle Town will face a major test of character tonight (Wednesday) when they visit the Lincolnshire League champions elect Hykeham Town for their penultimate game of the season (ko: 6.30pm).
Town’s own dreams of the title disappeared in heartbreaking style last Saturday when they conceded two injury time goals to crash to a cruel 4-3 defeat at home to Skegness Town.
With Hykeham having games in hand on Town and Skegness, that result means tonight’s opponents are almost certain to land the silverware.
Town spokesman Dale Johnson said: “It’s a big ask for the players tonight but they’ve got to get their heads up and hopefully produce a really positive performance.
“Hykeham are definitely in the driving seat in terms of winning the league and good look to them. They are a very good side.
“But it would be great to go there and get a good result. We felt we were the better team against Hykeham at our place a couple of weeks ago so we know what to expect.”
Town expect to have a full strength squad on duty tonight although boss Paul Johnson will want to check on the fitness of a number of players following Saturday’s setback.
After tonight, Town still have to play Ruston Sports while it’s highly likely the league will award them three points after scheduled opponents Humbertherm pulled out of a recent game because they could not raise a side.
