FOOTBALL: Horncastle Town have to put title challenge on hold

Horncastle Town’s first team squad will have to put their challenge for the Sills and Betteridge League title on hold for another week.

Town powered into second place in table before Christmas on the back of an impressive run of form - highlighted by a 2-0 win against fellow hopefuls Skegness United.

However, boss Paul Johnson and his players have been without a fixture over the Festive period - and into the New Year.

Now, their hopes of three points tomorrow (Saturday) against mid-table Rustons Sports have been dashed because their opponents are involved in the third round of the Lincolnshire Junior Cup.

That means Town won’t resume their league programme until next Saturday when they play Nettleham.

Town have arranged a friendly at home to North Somercotes under The Wong floodlights on Tuesday night.

However, they will be keeping a close eye on the results of several other games tomorrow - not least Skegness Town and Skegness United.

Skegness Town are still the red-hot favourites to retain the title. They have a three point lead over ‘The Wongers’ and have yet to lose this season. They entertain Sleaford Town tomorrow.

It’s also a frustrating weekend for Town’s Reserves who don’t have a game in the Lincoln Saturday League.

The club’s Development Squad are scheduled to visit Hykeham Tigers in the Lincoln Sunday League.

That means the club’s junior sides will take centre stage at The Wong on Sunday. Full details of fixtures and kick off times can be found on the club’s website.
