CRICKET: Woodhall Spa hold on to lead with winning draw

League leaders Woodhall Spa held on at the top with a winning draw away.

Losing the toss, Spa were asked to bat as Lindum elected to field on their home ground.

Woodhall suffered a near immediate setback when captain Jack Luffman went for a duck after 12 balls, caught by Willliam Wright off a Tom Lindsay delivery. Fellow opener Sam Evison went the same way for 16 runs, caught by Euan Pickering off a Ryan Sneddon ball.

The backbone of the innings proved to be Malinga Bandara (102no), with good support from Etienne Botha before he went lbw to Jonathan Miller.

Matthew Sargeant went the same way for a single run to the same man, who went on to take the next three wickets. Chris Anderson (8) was caught by Pickering, who then stumped Ross Dixon (2) and Joe Irving (15).

In reply, Spa wicket keeper caught openers Charles Tomlinson (2) and Wright (16), both off Irving deliveries.

Dixon caught Luke Robinson for a duck off a Luke Smith ball, whilst Lindum skipper Miller was bowled by Botha for 13. James Kimber only managed four runs before he was caught by Sargeant, with Bandara the bowler.

Ossama Rabbani stayed at the crease for 94 balls but only racked up 39 runs, caught finally by Botha off another Bandara ball. Dixon clean bowled Will Taylor for 14.

Lindsay (48) and Sneddon (3) remained unbeaten as Lindum’s 50 overs came to a close.

l Woodhall Spa 2nd are two points behind second placed Sleaford 2nd in the South Lincs and Border League Premier Division.

Spa (79) lost by 100 runs to Lindum Ramblers, whilst Sleaford won by 96 runs over Billingborough.

l Woodhall Spa Sunday side’s game in the Lincoln and District League Premier Division was abandoned due to rain.

The highlight was Etienne Botha’s 5-33 as Morton made 131-9.
