LETTERS: Walkers are Welcome in Horncastle

Horncastle Walkers are Welcome are a group of local people trying to raise the profile of Horncastle as a destination for walkers, and so increase business in the town.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those local businesses who contributed to the great success of the Wolds Walking Festival.

As you know, the event was hosted by Horncastle Walkers are Welcome and raised over £700.

Over 800 people participated in the weekend of events and over 400 people came to the Stanhope Hall on the second day.

Many of those walked through the town and commented that they will return to explore it more fully at a later date.

You reported some disappointment that we chose the Stanhope Hall as a venue for the finale.

Other options were considered, but this was the only venue which could accommodate such a large group of walkers and their vehicles safely.

Horncastle Walkers are Welcome has a planned programme designed to improve the quality of walking in and around Horncastle and includes:

*Walks from and to local businesses in an attempt to increase their footfall.

*A review of the canal walk. Some of the money raised from the Finale will be used to produce a new leaflet for tourists as the County Council is no longer able to do so.

*a litter pick of all the approach roads into Horncastle which are somewhat unsightly.

*the siting of Geocaches aling walking routes to encourage football.

We are a small, friendly group and are open to anyone to join. If you would like to join us, or have ideas which you think would assist our aims, do contact me
