The funeral of Connie Gillon, well known former resident of Woodhall Spa, took place on Monday, March 9 at St Peter’s Church.

She died in Leicester Royal Infirmary on February 15 after a short illness, aged 90.

Connie Gillon, one of three children, was born in 1924 into a farming family who lived near Northallerton in North Yorkshire.

During her formative years she developed a deep-rooted love for the countryside and rural life. She married a Scotsman, John Gillon, in 1946, and the two of them set out on their own farming adventures – managing estates in Gloucestershire and Hampshire, and then running their own farm near Kirkby-on-Bain for many years. Retiring from the farm in 1970, they lived in Thimbleby for a while before moving to Woodhall Spa in 1978.

Connie had interests outside farming and was involved in many activities within the local community. She was a founder member of the local Women’s Institute (becoming President), as well as being a member of the Mother’s Union, the Ladies’ Probus Club, and one of the local bowls clubs. She was a dedicated supporter of St Barnabas Hospice.

Connie also gave assistance to husband John for many years in his role as Secretary of the Woodhall Spa Agricultural Show. Her other interests included gardening, travel and her family.

Connie moved to Oakham in 2012 to be closer to one of her sons (husband John died in 2008). She enjoyed her final years there, although always regarded the Woodhall area as her true home.

The Service of Thanksgiving for Connie Gillon’s life was conducted by the Reverend John Thorold. Refreshments followed in the Abbey Lodge, with donations (in lieu of flowers) being made to St Barnabas Hospice.
