David ‘digs’ deep for his big charity ride

A Hagworthingham business owner will be swapping his mini-digger for a bicycle next week - to raise money for charity.

David Powell (54) will be covering around 1,000 miles as he cycles from John O’Groats to Lands End.

He’s tackling the marathon mission - which he plans to complete in 19 days - to raise funds for two charities, Horncastle based LIVES and The Bruce Trust.

Mr Powell, who runs his own mini-digger and driver hire business, has been clicking up the miles in training.

He will set out on July 7 and will even celebrate his 55th birthday on route.

He said: “I’ve been a keen cyclist for many years but never really done any great distances.

“The John O’Groats to Lands End route is something I’ve always wanted to do but when I’ve mentioned it to friends in the past, they’ve not exactly being as enthusiastic about it as me.

“So, I’ve decided to go it alone.

“If I don’t do it now, I probably never will.”

Mr Powell says that once he’d settled on the task, he decided to add in the fundraising element.

He added: “Lives and The Bruce Trust are two excellent organisations who do a brilliant job.

“I’ve spoke to them and they are more than happy.”

He hopes to raise more than £2,000 - and take in some of Scotland and England’s finest sights.

Mr Powell added: “The plan is to cover between 50 and 55 miles a day. I’ll mainly be sticking to back roads but I want to see something of the country while I’m doing it.”

He’s already spent around £2,000 financing the trip - and buying a new bike which features an extra-comfortable seat.

That might come in useful as he will be camping out along the route.
