Police in Horncastle have warned people to be on their guard against Christmas ‘con-men’ after foiling an attempt to a scam a local pensioner.
The News can reveal a man called at the home of a person in his 80s, offering to spray sealant on his roof at a cost of £400.
The work was not required but the pensioner attempted to draw the money from his account at a town centre bank.
Fortunately, staff became suspicious and called in police.
They stopped the withdrawal and when they visited the pensioner’s home, the con-man had disappeared.
PSCO Nigel Wass said investigations were continuing and involved Trading Standards officers.
He said: “If anyone calls at your door, always check their credentials.”
