A visit to a Horncastle filling station proved to be a very expensive experience for a Chapel St Leonards man.
Stefan Widdowson of Buckingham Drive, Chapel St Leonards, drove away from a filling station in the town without paying for fuel valued at £35.
However, he was left with a ‘bill’ for nearly £600 when he appeared before Magistrates in Skegness last Tuesday.
Widdowson, aged 26, admitted making off without paying for the petrol.
The court was told he had run out of money on July 23 as he drove home from work in Nottingham.
Widdowson told police he ‘thought he’d take the risk’ - the court was told.
He was fined £250 and ordered to pay a £180 criminal courts charge, £85 in prosecution costs, a £25 victim surcharge and £35 in compensation, making a total £575.
