It’s celebration time at Harpars Bar after it was crowned as best bar in town in a competition run by the Horncastle News.
Joint owners Rainer Barnes and Claire Farrell said they were delighted with the accolade with regulars describing Harpars as ‘one. big happy family.’
The two business partners bought Harpars in 2002 and have transformed the premises into a hugely popular venue.
Mr Barnes said: “It’s great to have won the award and we’d just like to thank everyone who voted for us.
“I’m sure there was a lot of competition and to come out on top is absolutely fantastic. We’re delighted.”
Mr Barnes put the success down to a ‘real team effort’ and the fact Harpars is firmly established as a friendly venue.
He added: “We have loads of regulars from a wide age group. They range from young families to people in their 80s.
“Everyone gets on. I’d say that at any one time, we know the names of 95 per cent of our customers.
“It’s really is a friendly place. We never have any trouble and the atmosphere is brilliant.”
Football, darts, pool and poker teams are based at Harpars. The football team, established 10 years ago, play in Division Two of the Lincoln Sunday League.
Another popular feature is live sport, which is shown on a number of screens.
Mr Barnes said: “We have three SKY TV boxes so we can show three different events at the same time. We also have BT Sport.”
The bar boasts a full range of beers, wines and spirits and Harpars won a quality award earlier this year from Guinness.
There are a series of promotional evenings including two-for-the-price-of-one cocktails and a Happy Hour.
Happy Hour takes place Monday to Friday from 5pm to 7pm and all draught pints and 175ml glasses of wine are only £2.40. No wonder it is so popular!
The specially created cocktail menu features Posh Splice, Woo Woo Woo and PS I Love You. There’s also a ‘shot’ of the week which is currently Black Forest Gateaux Vodka!
Mr Barnes said: “We also serve a range of hot drinks. There’s something for everyone.”
Harpars now features an impressive pool room after a former out-building was converted during the summer.
The opening was performed by Stig from the hit TV programme Top Gear.
There is an outdoor beer garden and disabled toilet facilities.
Mr Barnes added: “I’ve worked all over the world in this business. As soon as I saw Harpars back in 2002 I knew there was loads of potential here,
“It has been a challenge and there’s been a lot of hard work but we’re looking forward to a really successful future. We don’t want to change anything.”
As regular Charlotte said: “Harpars is the best place in town. It’s one, big happy family.”
