Lions roar into action at town’s Millennium Wood

It might seem like only yesterday that the Lions’ Millennium Wood was created on waste ground behind Tesco’s store.

The trees were planted in December 2000 to celebrate the new Millennium. At the time, the trees were no more than half inch ‘whips’, set out on a 10’ x 10’ grid.

However, Lions’ members are pictured above starting the thinning out process and discovered some of the fast growing poplars and willows had already grown up to 12 inches in diameter.

The wood is designed as a sheltered area for children to play - and for people to walk their dogs. The initial project was backed by a £5,000 grant from WREN.
