Horncastle Family History

Horncastle Family History Group was entertained by Eileen Chantry when she gave a talk on Burgh le Marsh's Jabez Good, a barber who opened a shop in 1851.

He was also parish clerk, a sign writer, taxidermist and woodcarver, with the eagle lectern in St Peter and St Paul Church standing testimony to his art.

Jabez had a sale of his many carvings and artefacts collected, does anyone know where any of them are now?

His family own a self portrait bust of Jabez, set in a lidded frame, which was on display at Burgh Heritage Group’s museum at the Windmill in Burgh on April 2.

Jabez also wrote a Lincolnshire Glossary, copies of which are on sale at the museum to the delight of members who had gone from Horncastle to see the bust.

On Wednesday, April 27, the group will hold its annual meeting, when Jean Howard will also give a talk on ‘Edith Chaplin, Marchioness of Londonderry, from Lincolnshire to Northern Ireland’.

Visitors are welcome and admission is free. Meetings are held at WI House in Banks Street, starting at 7.30pm.
