Always haunted by the smugness and hypocrisy of the Edwardian middle classes, in this play, written in 1938,Priestley tackles it comically.

The premise is simple enough: three couples, old friends and all married on the same day in the same chapel, gather to celebrate their silver anniversary.

When they discover they are not legally married, each couple initially reacts with proper Victorian horror – what will the neighbours think? – and all three couples find themselves re-evaluating their marriages.

Despite an alcohol-soaked photographer and a destructive housekeeper, in the end everything turns out well and the play ends on a happy note.

Tickets for the play, at the Lion Theatre, from Wednesday, May 18, to Saturday, May 31, are available from Horncastle Music Shop, 01507 526566.
