Emphatic win keeps Woodhall Spa team on course for perfect season

WITH only one match remaining Woodhall Spa Tennis Club’s men’s team are attempting to go the season unbeaten after an emphatic win against a depleted Skegness side.

Skegness were only able to field four players, and in doing so forfeited three matches.

This however made little difference to the score with Woodhall winning five of the six matches played to record an 8–1 victory.

The first two pairings of Dan Freeman and Dave Leggate, and Ant Hawkins and Keith Hillsmith, won all four of their games, with the third pairing of David Spencer and David Little losing the first of their two matches.

Woodhall’s final match on Saturday, August 11, against the also unbeaten Sleaford side will prove to be an exciting title decider, with only one promotion place up for grabs.

Meanwhile the Ladies 2nd team were beaten for the first time this season by a strong side from Spalding Tennis Club with the final score being 7–2 in Spalding’s favour.

Playing for Woodhall were Mandy Rollestone and Lydia Walker, who won one rubber, Lorraine Shepherd and Wendy Baxter, who also won one rubber, and Kate Liddy and Penny McQuade.

The 2nd team still have all to play for with one match to go at the end of the month.

The Ladies 1st team are currently top of Division 2 and looking for promotion with two matches remaining, both away against teams from Grimsby, one during the August Bank Holiday weekend and one in September.

Woodhall Spa Tennis Club will be holding its popular annual Open Mixed Tournament on Sunday September 2, starting at 10.30 am. Entries to John Sabberton, tel 01526 353123, no later than Saturday September 1. Entry fee £10 per couple. All day barbecue and drinks will be available.
