Brave Windley beaten in second round
JADE Windley’s run in the ITF’s $50,000 Tournament in Nottingham came to a disappointing end this afternoon when she lost in straight sets to Romania’s Mihaela Buzarnescu.
Windley, from Tattershall, had produced a stunning performance to beat the Czech Republic’s highly-rated Kristyna Pliskova in a thrilling first round match.
She could not repeat that form in the second round and was beaten 6-3, 6-1 by Buzarnescu whose world ranking of 141 put her 400 places above Windley.
Windley did trouble her opponent in the first set before the bigger-serving Romanian took control.
Windley had stayed on in Nottingham in search of vital world-ranking points, instead of attempting to pre-qualify for Wimbledon.
There is a chance, though, that she could still earn a “wild card” place for Wimbledon with officials still holding two places open for British-based players.
