Positive display despite defeat
Horncastle 23,
Cleethorpes 56
Forget the final score line. Horncastle gave a good account of themselves against a strong Cleethorpes side.
After a rather turbulent start to the campaign, Horncastle competed well for long periods and the contest was a lot closer than the score indicated.
Paul File landed a long-distance penalty to give Horncastle an early lead, although the visitors quickly hit back.
Horncastle regained the advantage with tries after 17 and 19 minutes and they looked settled, although their pack did have problems in the scrums.
They did sort out that headache, but Cleethorpes were a determined side and kept the board ticking over at a steady rate.
When Horncastle secured decent possession, they produced some good handling and strong, aggressive running which led to another converted try and a penalty.
Cleethorpes, though, had the last word and converted a try with the last kick of the game.
Although beaten, Horncastle could reflect on a number of positive performances.
The club is still looking to attract new players and training is held on Wednesday evenings at 7pm at the Astro bar.
