THE golden summer of sport keeps getting better and better after Horncastle kickboxer Jamie Key took gold at the FSK British Open Championships.
Jamie managed to beat competitors from across Britain in Manchester and it has given him a confidence boost ahead of the WKC World Championships in Montreal, Canada next month.
The 23-year-old balances life as a kickboxer with work at Crowders Garden Centre, Horncastle, and admits it’s sometimes difficult to cope with work and his passion for the sport.
Jamie said: “It’s hard to balance everything when I just want to train.
“It can be difficult motivating yourself after finishing work.”
When asked what it is that keeps him going he answered: “I want to win.
“I’m hungry for success and I want to win things and do well in tournaments.
“You’ve got to have dedication if you want to do this.”
With the FSK British Open title under his belt, Jamie is buoyed by the knowledge that he is one of the best fighters that Britain has to offer going into the World Championships.
“It’s a big confidence boost for me,” he said. “I want to get the win for me and my team.”
Jamie trains up to four times a week and meets up with the national team for training once a month.
“I’ve got three weeks to improve before we fly to Montreal,” he continued. “There are a few things to improve.
“But then again there are always little things you can work on.
“It also helps that my manager at Crowders, Ken Dawson, is so supportive and lets me have time off for competitions or training when I do need it.
“I’m also thankful for the support I receive from Robert Crowder, who has paid for my trip to Canada, and also Ben Smith, who owns the Punch House pub.
“Without their help a lot of this probably wouldn’t have been achievable.”
