It’s ‘green’ for go at village bowls club

The future of a village bowls club has been secured thanks to a hard working committee and vital funding from the National Lottery.

Bowlers in Mareham le Fen feared their club would close as part of plans to build a new village hall.

The existing village hall is being sold, along with the adjacent bowls green. Proceeds will go towards a new village hall.

The scheme potentially meant the end of bowls in Mareham after 62 years.

However the the bowls’ clurefused to admit defeat. They bought an area of land behind the existing green and set about building a new one..

The new green should be in play next year.

Now, they have secured almost £25,000 in funding from the lottery.

If everything goes to plan, the green will be in use in 2014.

Club chairman Noel Bush explained: “It all started in 2000 when we first heard about the plan to sell our green.

“We weren’t prepared to let bowls in Mareham die .”

The bowls club finally got the go ahead to buy the land in 2011.

Since then, they’ve been working hard on the new green.

Mr Bush said: “A lot of effort has gone into it. There were times when we wondered whether it would happen.

“But now we’ve got the green - and the funding - it is brilliant.

“We’ve put in a lot of money ourselves but we couldn’t have done it without the lottery funding.

“We can’t wait to start playing on the new green.

“It will be county standard - bigger and better than the old one.

“In all, it’s probably cost between £35-40,000 but it is worth it.”

The funding comes from Sport England via the National Lottery.

Ironically, the village hall management committee has been unable to find a buyer for the existing site.
