CROQUET: Woodhall Spa club hosts Lincoln Cup

Woodhall Spa Croquet Club hosted teams from Nottingham, Branston, Gainsborough and North Hykeham to play for the Lincoln Cup at the weekend.

The format for the Saturday was doubles play and for the Sunday it was singles.

Fourteen pairs entered the doubles competition. Six games were played by each pair, the best of 13 hoops in the morning and the best of seven in the afternoon.

Winners for the fifth time were Mike and Richard Bilton, a father and son team from Richmond Park Croquet Club in Gainsborough, with six games won and 33 hoops won against 14 lost. In second place were two Woodhall Spa players, Barrie Darling and Tom Johnson, who won five out of their six games with 31 hoops won against 24 lost.

Sunday saw better weather and 18 singles players taking part. A similar format was used, but as it was a better day, the best of the full 13 hoops was played throughout the day.

Overall winner of the competition was Pauline Donner of Woodhall Spa Croquet club who won all six of her games with 42 hoops won against 13 lost. Second was Ralph Timms from Branston Croquet Club who also won all six of his games, but had 15 losses. In third place was another Woodhall Spa player, Roy Donner, who also won all six of his games but lost 22 hoops.

Chairman Bob Potter was thanked for his organisation of the two days, which had run smoothly and been enjoyed by all players in a very friendly and fun manner.
