The day started very well with the heavyweight hammer, the event in which Jim is the Irish record holder. The first two throws of around nine metres were solid enough, however, on his final throw I unleashed a 9.52m effort, surpassing his national record by 15cm.

Jim said: “I was absolutely blown away and it helped me secure the silver medal.”

Then it was on to the discus which has been a bit up and down for Jim this season. It didn’t start well with his first two efforts out at 25.50m, but his final effort was his best of the season – 28.42m – which enabled him to snatch the bronze medal.

Jim will be competing at the Midlands Heavyweight Hammer Pentathlon and the Midlands One-handed Hammer Championships in Derby at the weekend.
