The tennis season is upon us again and Woodhall Spa Tennis Club’s teams have begun their summer matches.
For the first time the club have entered a ladies team into the Aegon league. This is a county based competition, with the potential to be promoted to a regional and then national level.
Matches are competitive and involve playing both singles and doubles. The season began mid-April with the team, comprising Lydia Walker, Sam Parker, Mireya MacRury and Sue Leggate, recording an 8-4 win against Eastgate Tennis Club.
The following week the team travelled to Boston for what proved to be a very tense and exciting match. Playing for Woodhall were Sam Parker, Alison Lauder, Bridgett Scott and Mireya MacRury.
After the first round of singles matches the match was tied and this was the situation after the doubles matches too. Two singles matches then took place involving a champions tie-break to decide the outcome and again the match was tied. It then fell to Mireya and Bridgett to play a champions tie-break in a doubles against two of the Boston players with the Woodhall duo winning by 10-8 to gain the overall win.
The Ladies 1st team played Sleaford last weekend in Division 1 of the Lincs Slazenger League and they too were off to a flying start with a 6-3 win.
The match was long and hard-fought with four of the rubbers being decided on champions tie-breaks.
Woodhall managed to win 3 out of the 4 tie-breaks, which was crucial to the final result.
The Woodhall team were Sam Parker and Sue Leggate, Sue Bowser and Helen Mair, Bridgett Scott and Jenny Caswell.
The Mixed Team and Ladies 2nd (Elite) team also began their matches last week with the Men’s team having to wait until the end of the month for their first encounter.
