Horncastle Tennis Club have had a very busy week of tennis with 22 players representing their club from U8 through to adult.
The U8 Mini Red team travelled to Eastgate, Lincoln, for their match in the Aegon county league. Max Wilson and Redford Bramley won all their matches, Rowan Bramley lost just one and Turner Kingswood lost 2. A great 13-3 win for Horncastle.
The U12 Aegon team were also away - this time at Tealby. Ben Tyrrell, Ross Armstrong and Joe Sheldon all won their singles matches. Charlie Tant rushed to the rescue of the team when one player couldn’t make it at the last minute. Eating his lunch on the way Charlie won his doubles with Joe but lost his singles. Ben and Ross won their doubles too, so a 5-1 win for Horncastle.
The U10 team didn’t fair so well at Louth, losing all their matches. Players were Alex Armstrong, Lewis Downs and Albany Peplinski.
The men’s Aegon team were home against Sleaford. The team of Karl Sutton, Matthew Dalton, Dan Dalton and Ben Martin won all their matches singles and doubles.
The ladies first team played their first match of the summer season at St. James Grimsby. With new pairings all round this year they were very pleased to come away with a 5-4 win. Jessica Nugent and Sally Speed won 2 rubbers as did Jenny Golland and Mireya MacRury. Lorna Bowser, at just 13 years old, was playing her first ladies match and secured the essential fifth rubber with partner Shirley Sutton. Showing nerves of steel, Lorna played a very steady tie break with few errors winning 10-8.
Bank holiday Monday saw the annual Stonell Cup take place at the courts. This was a fun mixed doubles tournament in memory of Harry Stonell who tended the grass courts in Stanhope Rd some years ago.
