Horncastle Tennis Club teams are moving towards the end of their winter match schedule with all age groups in action last weekend.

On Saturday the Ladies First Veterans team played a home fixture against Grimsby Tennis Centre. The team this week were Mireya MacRury and Jenny Golland and Jane Clark and Sue Bowser. The ladies played a good match and won by seven sets to one.

The junior mini teams were playing away against Boston B. The U8 Mini Red team were Max Wilson, who won all his matches, Grace Sheldon, who won 3 out of 4, Sam Baxter, who won 2 out of 2 and Hannah Downs, who had some unlucky close games but didn’t manage any singles wins.

However Max and Hannah teamed up for the doubles and won, so the final result was a credible 10-8 to Horncastle. This puts Horncastle in second place in this County league with two matches left to play.

The U9 team didn’t fair so well, but playing his first match for Horncastle, Matthew Hunter came back from a set down to win his singles match in three sets.

Joe Sheldon and Alex Armstrong were playing for the U12 team. Joe won both his singles but Alex lost, so the doubles decided the tie. Joe and Alex fought hard and played some great rallies but lost out to the Boston boys. The team however remain at the top of their league.

On Sunday the Ladies Second Veterans team played at home against Collingham. The team of Sally Speed and Karen Stott and Julie Hillsmith and Jane Reeds were playing their last match of the season and really needed a win to avoid relegation.

The girls played well and finished with a five sets to three win.

Arrangements are now well in hand for the summer matches starting in April where once again all age groups will be competing.
