Holly Clyburn, the Woodhall Spa based golf, made a terrific start to her quest for the Richo Women’s British Open title at Royal Birkdale today (Thursday).
Clyburn fired a one-under-par 71 to stand joint third on the leaderboard after the early starters completed their rounds.
That score represented something of a recovery after Clyburn opened the tournament with a bogey-bogey start at the demanding Southport links course.
She hit back with an eagle at the par five sixth before dropping another shot on the 11th.
However, two more birdies at the 13th and 18th holes saw her firmly among the leading pack as one of only a handful of players under par.
Japan’s Ayako Vehera led the tournament early on with a score of four under. Her nearest challengers were American duo Morgan Pressell (two under) and Stacy Lewis (one under).
European Tour ace Clyburn is one of several players tipped to head the domestic challenge for one of golf’s most coveted prizes.
Another home favourite - Charley Hull - was one over par after completing her first round.
