ATHLETICS: Wragby ace Jim smashes Irish record

Wragby athlete Jim Gillespie set a new Irish record while competing in the British Master Indoor Pentathlon Championships in London on Sunday.

The event was held at Lee Valley and Gillespie smashed the previous Irish best by 250 points with a score of 1,878 points.

He now holds both the both the indoor and outdoor Pentathlon records.

He said: “My training has gone very well this winter so I felt that I was in good form, but beating the old record by such a big margin was brilliant.

“One of the things that helped a lot was having my son Kieran with me.

“He he was watching my performances and offering technical advice after each effort.

“I’m sure he’s going to make a really good coach as he gains more experience.”

It was a good day for the Irish in general as three other national records were beaten in various age groups.

Just to round things off, Jim woke up on Monday morning to discover the Irish national cricket team had beaten the West Indies in the Cricket World Cup!
