HOCKEY: Horncastle teams go head-to-head

Horncastle Ladies 1st XI 9

Horncastle Ladies 2nd XI 0

Horncastle Hockey Club’s two ladies’ teams briefly put any friendships to one side last Saturday as they went head-to-head in their first league encounter.

Not surprisingly, it was the first team who came out on top, despite an unforeseen six week break from match action.

Both sets of players were more than happy to fulfil what was a re-arranged fixture after the initial match was called off because of the poor state of the astro-turf pitch.

The first eleven pressed hard from the start and gained a quick lead courtesy of Jodie Sharkey who set the tone for the remainder of the game.

Despite the score line, the second eleven fought back at every opportunity and created numerous attacks down the wings leading to several goals scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, these opportunities were squandered - or ruled out by some impressive fending.

The first eleven duly delivered a lesson in the art of turning pressure into goals and capitalised on their scoring opportunities at the other end of the pitch at regular intervals.

In all, they added a further eight goals courtesy of Georgia Bullen (2), Gemma Lewis (4) and Serena Garcia (2).

The second team keeper, Laura Neame, took the player of the match award. She had an excellent game and a string of superb saves which at least kept the goal tally in single figures.

Both teams look forward to the second half of the season in which they will aim to continue their success on and off the pitch - hopefully gaining more support and more players.
