HOCKEY: Horncastle stick together as a team despite defeated

Horncastle ladies 2s 0–4 Boston

AFTER having no choice but to concede against Alford 2s last week, captain Carly Neame rallied around to try and get a team together for this week’s clash against Boston.

With just a squad of just 11, Horncastle took to the pitch aware there was no back up.

During the first half Boston showed their strength and spent most of the time within Horncastle’s D. Keeper Laura Neame led the defence and kept them at bay well into the half, denying Boston shots from short corners, Alex Tokelove making some great clearances.

Finally a shot sneaked into the net, but Horncastle fought back and powered into the oppositions D with runs made by Carly Neame, Ruby Frankish and Heather Johnstone.

Unfortunately shots weren’t making it on target and also short corners weren’t going Horncastle’s way either.

Five minutes before the half–time whistle a harsh tackle from the Boston captain ended in her being sent off the pitch.

The period ended with Boston 0–1 up and very frustrated that the score was not higher.

After the break Horncastle took to the pitch first ready to fight back. Unfortunately with substitutes in place, Boston were a lot fresher than a slightly tired Horncastle.

Horncastle took the push back and immediately broke through down the right wing with great play from captain Neame and Lizzie Ellis. Unfortunately their efforts were denied and Boston fought back and scored a total of three more goals.

Horncastle stayed strong with their heads held high and battled on with more great passing to the right, with Charlie Hall and Ellis making great space.

Grace Hillsmith collected the ball in midfield and passed onto Neame, who ran over to the left to collect the ball near the top of the D. Neame turned as the keeper made a run out towards her only to watch the ball go through her legs and into the net.

Celebration broke out before the umpire had to break it to Horncastle that Neame was outside the D by centimetres when she struck the ball and the goal was disallowed.

This didn’t dampen the Horncastle side’s spirits, they spent a lot more time in the attacking half, but were unfortunate not to score. The final whistle blew at 0–4.

Team - Neame, Tokelove, L. Neame, Hillsmith, Costello, Frankish, Johnstone, Hall, Hanson, Kerwick, Ellis. Player of the match Alex Tokelove.
