Woodhall Spa golfers help Lincolnshire triumph

A TRIO of Woodhall Spa golfers helped Lincolnshire Ladies win the Midlands County North title for the fourth time in a row.

Sisters Holly and India Clyburn – together with teenager Emily Slater – were in impressive form as Lincolnshire packed too much power for their opponents at The Nottinghamshire Golf Club.

Lincolnshire never looked back after whitewashing Shropshire 9-0 on the opening day as they booked their place in the national finals at Budleigh Salterton GC, Devon, in September.

The success marked another triumph for Holly Clyburn who went into the week-long county event just hours after helping Great Britain and Ireland beat America to win the Curtis Cup.

Holly played something of a restricted role at the Nottinghamshire, which was understandable given her recent hectic schedule.

Indeed, she probably took more pleasure from watching younger sister India make her debut for Lincolnshire’s senior first team.

Of the Woodhall trio, two-handicapper Slater secured the most points during the week-long event and only surrendered her 100 per cent record on the final afternoon.

Slater, aged 15, made an excellent start, winning both her foursomes and singles in that demolition of Shropshire.

Holly Clyburn’s inclusion only strengthened Lincolnshire’s line-up on day two against Nottinghamshire.

She teamed up with Helen Hewlett (Seacroft) to win the foursomes and then saw off the challenge of Lauren Spray on the 17th green in the singles.

Slater continued on her winning ways, securing a three and two victory in the foursomes and a last-hole victory in the singles as Lincolnshire ran out winners by a clear six points.

Lincolnshire enjoyed the same winning margin on day three against Leicestershire with India Clyburn showing plenty of determination to battle to a half against Caz Whalley while Slater added two more victories.

On day four against Staffordshire, there was a rare defeat for Holly Clyburn in the singles, but Lincolnshire still enjoyed a 6-3 victory with Slater again returning maximum points.

On the final day, the Clyburn sisters were both “rested” as Lincolnshire sealed the title with a 5.5-3-5 win against Derbyshire.

The Lincolnshire squad was: Helen Hewlett (Seacroft), Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa), Jess Wilcox (Blankney), Sophie Beardsall (Greetham Valley), Emma Tipping (Greetham Valley), Emily Slater (Woodhall Spa), Emilee Taylor (Holme Hall), Helen McDougall (Lincoln), India Clyburn (Woodhall Spa).

n Holly Clyburn is stepping up her preparations for the British Ladies’ Amateur Championships which will be held at Carnoustie, Scotland, next week.
