Kimsey part of Great Britain thriller
WOODHALL Spa golfer Nathan Kimsey narrowly missed out on success as Great Britain and Ireland suffered a heartbreaking last-day defeat against Europe in the St Andrews Trophy in Ireland at the weekend.
The contest attracted all of Britain’s and Europe’s top amateur golfers with Kimsey securing a place after a series of outstanding displays in recent weeks.
However, Great Britain were beaten 12.5-11.5 on a thrilling final day at the famous Portmarnock Links course.
GB established a 7-5 lead going into the last day but Europe stormed back and clinched victory after winning the last three singles matches.
Kimsey was one of the unlucky British players, losing three-and-two to Edouard Espana in the penultimate game.
The highlight of the three-day contest for Kimsey (19) was a three-and-two victory in the foursomes on the Saturday, playing alongside Ireland’s Kevin Phelan.
Kimsey, who recently established a place in the world’s top 100-ranked players, has confirmed he intends to stay in the amateur ranks and challenge for a place in the Walker Cup next year.
