GOLF: Nathan Kimsey finishes second down under
Nathan Kimsey produced one of the best performances of his increasingly promising career to finish joint second in the star-studded Lake Macquarie Amateur Golf Championship in Australia.
The Woodhall Spa star fired rounds of 67,69 and 71 at the Belmont Golf Club in Sydney to go into the final 18 homes as joint leader alongside playing partners Kiwi Josh Munn and Australian Brett Drewett on nine-under-par.
In an exciting showdown between the trio, Kimsey and Drewitt fired three-under-par 69’s but Munn had the back nine of his life to return in just 31 shots and card a 66.
That gave him a three-shot winning margin but Kimsey could still look back on the tournament with plenty of pride.
He was the only competitor in a field of almost 200 of the world’s top players to shoot all four rounds under par.
His performance also cemented his place in the world’s top 50 and boosted his hopes of further success in 2013.
Kimsey briefly led the final round when he carded a remarkable birdie at the 347-metre eighth hole.
He found trouble from the tee and appeared to be stymied behind a tree off the fairway but produced an amazing chip to within 12 feet and sank the putt.
However, it was Munn who took charge with an eagle at the 10th and the 21-year-old never looked back.
Still, Kimsey finished ahead of several top-rated players, including Brady Watt who is ranked fifth in the world.
Kimsey is in Australia as a member of the England elite squad and he’s produced some encouraging performances.
He finished 19th in the Masters of the Amateurs tournament and reached the last 32 of the Australian Amateur Championship.
It has certainly proved to be an interesting trip as Kimsey has had to battle temperatures in the high 40’s, bush-fires, winds of more than 40mph and torrential rain.
Kimsey has now moved on to the New South Wales championship but his preparations have been cut-short because the area has been battered by the tail end of a cyclone!
