GOLF: Kimsey joins elite squad

WOODHALL SPA golfer Nathan Kimsey has received a dazzling double boost to round off a superb season in style.

The 19-year-old, who recently made his full England debut, has powered up to 62 in the latest world amateur rankings.

Not surprisingly, his form has earned him a place in the elite England squad which will receive specialist training and coaching during the winter.

The call-up is another major boost for Kimsey who has set his sights on a place in the prestigious Walker Cup side next summer.

The Walker Cup is the amateur equivalent of the Ryder Cup with Great Britain and Ireland’s top players taking on their American counterparts.

Kimsey sprang to prominence earlier in his career, but his progress during the last 18 months has been astonishing.

He was ranked outside the world’s top 500 but his latest position puts him within touching distance of the leading European, American, Australian and Far Eastern players.

Kimsey has been one of England’s top performers in recent internationals and established his place in the elite squad with a series of impressive results in last month’s Home International series in Scotland.

Although Kimsey could not help England retain the title, he saw off the challenge of a number of higher-ranked opponents.

There was speculation Kimsey might turn professional this year, but he recently confirmed his intention to stay in the amateur ranks for at least another 12 months.
