FOOTBALLERS turned out in force as Woodhall Spa FC held a Help for Heroes Charity Event on Sunday August 19.

All Woodhall teams from Under-9’s up to Men’s Sunday League each invited teams from surrounding areas, including teams from Horncastle Town and Louth Old Boys to take part and play against them.

Newly formed Woodhall FC U18’s, managed by Sally Cheetham and Steve Watters, were struggling to find an U18’s team to play against them due to other committments.

Mareham FC Men’s Team kindly stepped in, and agreed to play them with both teams donating their player’s match subs to the Help For Heroes charity.

The Mareham men scored two goals early in the first half, but the Woodhall boys never gave up and both teams gave it their all despite the heat causing the referee to stop the game twice for teams to take fluid breaks.

Late in the second half,
Callum Cheetham back heeled the
ball through the air towards Alex Smith who headed in Woodhall’s first goal.

Shortly afterwards, Matt Merrival made a storming run up the wing towards the goal, only to be brought down in the area and Woodhall were awarded a penalty.

Jim Watters stepped up and struck the ball which Mareham’s goalkeeper saved, but Jim followed it up on the rebound and fired it into the back of the net bringing the score to 2-2.

The last five minutes were very tense with both teams battling it out until the referee blew the final whistle.

Due to the heat, the referee decided against extra time so it was down to a penalty shootout.

It was 5-4 to Woodhall as Mareham stepped up to take a must-score penalty.

The whole ground, which had come to a standstill, erupted with applause and cheers as Woodhall goalkeeper Nathan Collis made the game winning save and was immediately swamped by his teammates.

Joe Rossington presented the Help For Heroes Charity Shield donated by Ajet Drainage to Woodhall Spa U18’s captain David Richardson.
