Tough pre–season test for Horncastle Town

Horncastle Town FC Comment

by Lloyd Harmston

Town entertained Harrowby United in another pre-season friendly fixture on Saturday, the club having been newly-elected into the United Counties League First Division.

This is basically last season’s Beehive FC squad, winners of the prestigious County Cup, to which has been added a number of useful Grantham-based players.

Horncastle manager Paul Johnson was expecting a very tough encounter and so it turned out, with the visitors claiming a 5-0 victory.

“There is little doubt they will do very well in their new competition this season” said the Town boss.

“They are strong in every department and barely gave us a chance to get into the game. However, we were certainly not at our best as a team, and there was no-one who performed particularly well individually.”

Johnson admitted that he learned more from this game about what his side cannot do, rather than what they can do.

He added: “I am perhaps trying to accommodate all my best players rather than thinking more about who would be better for any particular position.

“I really do believe we have a decent squad, but the question arises as to whether or not it is better than last season“

There was an aborted attempt at a ‘friendly’ match at Spilsby during the week, but a second half flare-up between players caused the referee to abandon the proceedings.

This Friday evening The Wong will host the John Rawdon Memorial Match, when the visitors will be a representative side from Boston United.

Now hailed as an annual fixture in the Town calendar, the game commemorates the footballing life and service of a well-liked former club player and manager. Kick-off is at 7pm.

That could well be the final outing for the new-season squad before the start of the Lincolnshire League programme on Saturday August 18. Town will be at home to Lincoln based Ruston Sports.
