Horncastle to face Gainsborough tonight

THE season is barely two months old and Town’s senior side already has a second blank Saturday.

Curious when considering there has been an almost regular emphasis on midweek games and yet there is a logical reason for the inactivity.

Manager Paul Johnson explained the thinking behind another free Saturday. He said: “Some time ago we were made aware that quite a number of our squad were to be involved in one of those ‘celebratory’ weekends for a birthday get-together.

“We requested of the league authorities to give consideration for a postponement. Added to the number of injury problems we really would have been struggling and the league knows our honest reputation and that we would not make such a request unless it was for genuine reasons. Our request was therefore granted.”

Talking of the injury situation, there is real hope that things are turning around. Gaz Melia should be fit for tonight’s evening home game against Gainsborough Town.

Midfielder Ben Wadd is making his way back through the reserve side although he is unavailable anyway for the next couple of weeks.

Really good news comes from full-back Daryl Dunn, who has yet to make his start to the season. He should be in the reckoning for selection over the next few weeks.

Tonight’s fixture brings Gainsborough to The Wong, having sent Town packing from the League Challenge Cup recently by four goals to one.

Manager Johnson rates this opposition highly and is certainly under no illusion about the difficulty of this league fixture.

However, one does gain the impression that he would be disappointed not to improve on that previous result. Worryingly, Gainsborough put 13 goals past Sleaford Reserves last weekend.

This Saturday Town are again at home for the visit of Louth Town Reserves when Johnson expects to have most of his squad available, with the notable exception of Tommy Chalk, still on the fitness trail.
