Hykeham Tigers 3 Horncastle Town Development XI 5
Town’s Development Squad made a great start to 2015 in Division Five of the Lincoln Sunday League with a hard earned win at Hykeham Tuigers.
Town started the game at a terrific pace. Persistent pressure led to a corner and Luke Blondell whipped in a great ball which was tapped in by Will Burton.
Town’s regular ‘keeper, Liam Smith, was missing so Eddie Wright stepped in and went in goal.
The midfield pairing of Callum Low and Andrew Bullivant played some varied, probing balls in and behind the Hykenham defence.
After more pressure, Hykenham handled the ball inside their own box and Blondell stepped up to convert from the spot.
Against the run of play, Hykenham opened their account with an own goal from the unfortunate Callum Hotchin.
Town returned to the attack and created further chances, but couldn’t convert them into goals before the break.
During his half time team talk, manager Mark Simmons urged his players to step up their efforts.
Town duly dominated possession and it was only a matter of time before they went 3-1 up, Blondel grabbing his second goal.
Straight from the re-start, Town knocked the ball around well. Centre backs Harry Simmons and Dave Maplethorpe linked with wingers Burton and Nathan Wright and George Swift stuck a chance past the ‘keeper to make it 4-1.
Town then sat back and paid the price as two quick goals by Hykeham led to a score of 4-3.
Stung in action, Town rallied but could not find the back of the net.
Substitute Henry Lydiatt replaced Nathan Wright and Town’s attacking efforts paid off when a great through ball from Callum Low found Swift, who rounded the ‘keeper to finish in style.
Town finished the game the stronger side and were well worth all three points.
Assistant manager Alan Wilkinson said: “We had all the possession and numerous attempts on their goal, It was a great start to the new year - a fine win.“
